JUNK PSA #4: Toxic Chemistry

As JUNK roars towards the half way mark, another reminder of what this voyage is all about: drawing public attention to some of the ecological and human health impacts associated with plastic. Like Bisphenol A in baby bottles and toys

Heres Marcus chatting about BPA from the middle of the Pacific Ocean:

Continued thanks to our generous communications sponsors - Long Beach Marine Electronics, OCENS Inc., and Explorer Satellite for making these videos possible.

In April, Canada became the first country to ban baby bottles containing BPA. Will the US follow suit?

BPA is also in canned foods, such as Wolfgang Puck soups, I have the email stating that. Also SB 1713, which will ban it is in the CA Legislature now.

Has there been any research on the link between the chemicals found in plastics and the recent rise in children diagnosed with Autism? The time would coincide with the increase of each. I am truly enjoying your blog, keep up the great work. You guys are an inspiration.

First, thank you. I appreciate this specific info and the related links. Recycle code 2, good. Recycle 5, good. Recyclce code 7 (2+5), bad.

Second, is that a polycarbanate five gallon water bottle you're using for your message in a bottle, bottle?

I watched a story about this on the news. The reporter was kind of stupid though. She said, in a very serious tone, "Well, if your boat works, then aren't you afraid that they're going to start making all of the world's boats out of plastic bottles." And the guy just looked at her very strangely smiled and said no... I agree that this is a great blog!

didn't you get the memo? the FDA declared Bisphenol-A safe.

http://consumerist.com/5037772/fda-declares-bisphenol-a-safe

"the trace amounts of bisphenol A that leach out of food containers are not a threat to infants or adults."
