Squid Parts

Apparently intrigued by what it saw, this inquisitive squid launched itself onto JUNK for a closer look, a costly move for little Mr. Calamari. Finding him on deck the next morning, Marcus checks him out, and finds that squid have some pretty interesting features...

I like the concept behind this whole act, and the squid thing was pretty interesting. Luckily the squid didn't fly out of the sea into that guys face.

Do you document interesting marine life you see along the way (turtles, whales, etc.)with GPS locations?

I agree this is an awesome undertaking. I do most of my adventuring via imagination. Without people like you guys out there doing this kind of stuff, people like me wouldn't have anything worth dreaming about. Excellent.

I love how these unexpected events happen. Squid flying on to a plastic boat! The Ocean can still be a great mystery for so many of us. Keep up the good work in sailing and reporting your journey. FYI, I just wrote a blog entry on my blog sharing your journey and blog site. Let's spread the word!

Fantastic! I always think it's odd how squids have beaks... How did they evolve to have them?

Nice to see you haven't sunk yet!

You may find company out there, Roz Savage and her rowboat. You should be able to see her sometime the 7th 8th or 9th! She could use some water if you have extra, her water maker has quit.

horray squid! At least it was a small one!

I've had a case when I was off-shore fishing with my father and we had a flying fish fly into our boat and smack my dad in the back pretty hard. For a couple of minutes he was (yelling) asking me why the heck I decided to punch him. I pointed to the deck where the fish was flopping around....

Squid is my favorite stuff when it comes to eating ; sushi, sashimi or tempura! But then it looks kind of creepy if you take a good look at it. I'm originally from Japan, but spent half of my life in Hawaii. Currently I'm in Florida for my hubbby's work, but I can't wait for you guys to get to Hawaii!! Good luck with your journey!!! What you're doing means so much to so many people

Hey guys, just found out about you through a comment on the BBC website. Great job you're doing, I wish your cause and project as much publicity as possible!

P.S. Dr. Marcus is a hunk, btw.

Looks like the Humboldt squid - the bigger guys can move up to 15 mph (13 knots) by using water propulsion and their fins. Now if only there was some way to harness them to the boat...
